On Sunday August 8, Tonee Valentine and myself “took it to the stage” in a concert event billed as “Classic Soul Sunday.” And as you can tell from the title, the evening was full of “SOUL!” Until that night, we hadn’t performed together in about 26 plus years…since our early band days back in the late 70’s. And the evening with all of it’s trappings was simply magical. We covered great hits like “Slipping Into Darkness” and “Cisco Kid,” (WAR) to “Break Up To Make Up” (Stylistics) and ‘Sara Smile” (Hall And Oats). And before the night was over, we did an impromptu set featuring the music of ‘Earth Wind & Fire”! Mercy! Check for the live CD of the entire evening…IN STORES NOW!!
Recently I had a chance to perform on the cruise ship ms Veendam, (Holland America) and had an awesome time cranking out tunes at The Piano Bar. A beautiful Yamaha Grand piano was my instrument and it was such a pleasure to play, I don’t know if I could ever go back to my digital piano having been spoiled by the richness and tone of a well crafted instrument like the one under my fingers every night for one month! I met some amazing people and developed some great friendships during my stint. And on my last week I formed “The New Supremes” out of some of the ladies who frequented sitting around my piano, and we sang “inspired” versions of “Come See About Me”, “My Guy”, ‘Where Did Our Love Go”, and of course, ‘Stop In The Name Of Love”! Who sang lead you ask? They all did!
Carter Barron Amphitheatre was the site of a weekend gig on July 17 featuring D.C's own, The Jewels, The Impressions, and "The Ice Man" himself, Jerry Butler. Last time we played D.C. it rained and Obama was not in the White House. However, this trip both the weather and "The Prez" were "on the one". Although vacationing in Maine, The President was not in town; neither did he have the slightest knowledge that we were playing in the city! Not to worry…The packed house was all we needed as we brought back the memories of the great music that dominated the consciousness of America during the 60's. It was very humid during the sound check, but cooled off later that evening for a beautiful night time concert. The audience was on their feet as we open with "Move On Up" (that always gets'em) we ended with a celebratory "It's Alright" as everyone in the house remembered the "Blue Light In The Basement" days. GOOD ONE!
